Today Microsoft announced that they’ll be giving away a limited online version of Office. Why? Because Google has Google Docs, that’s why.
This battle between Google and Microsoft is taking shape nicely, I’d say. Microsoft takes over the operating system world. Google takes over the search world. Microsoft comes up with Bing, a Google-like search. Google introduces Google Docs, a free online office suite. Microsoft counters with a free version of their office suite. Google announces a new operating system. Everyone freaks out. Microsoft owns the Internet browser. Google strikes back with the ultra-sleek Chrome. Virtual Earth or Google Maps? Gmail or Hotmail?
It’s a classic battle. And who will win? You and I. We’ll see innovation, we’ll have choices and prices will improve. Nobody can complain about that.
